FOREST GARDEN 001

Design of a forest garden in Magdalenka. Modernity among the pines (3600 m²).
“Forest Garden 001” is our realization in a picturesque wooded part of Magdalenka. On a plot of 3600 m² we created an establishment that fully respects the existing landscape. However, we introduced order and functionality into it. Our main idea was to create a smooth transition between the modern body of the building and the wild nature of the pine forest.
Design Challenges. Landscaping and tree protection
The project site posed a major challenge for us. We had to deal with the natural terrain and valuable vegetation.
- Differences in levels: The plot has significant slopes. Hills overgrown with pine trees rise 1.5 meters in places relative to the first floor of the building. We used engineering solutions in the form of retaining walls, which effectively stabilized the slopes.
- Preservation of old-growth trees: Our priority was to preserve decades-old pine trees. They give the site a unique character. We matched the design to the existing layout of the trees. We minimized interference with their root systems.
Functional layout. Geometry in the forest
The functions of the garden were dictated by the unusual layout of the building. Its first floor is divided into three independent parts connected by a courtyard.
Inner patio and viewing axis
The patio is the “heart” of the house and garden. Family life is concentrated here. We designed it to provide maximum view opening to the forest. On the main compositional axis we located decorative pool. Its unique element is a tree planted in a pot “submerged” in the water surface. This creates a picturesque, almost surreal image.
Formalization of space
To tame the forest chaos, we used geometric retaining walls around the elevated areas. They give the garden a more formal and elegant character.
Microclimate and materials
The garden in Magdalenka affects all the senses. The overflowing water in the pool introduces a soothing noise (“white noise”). It masks possible noises from outside. The large sheet of water, combined with the shade of the pine trees, provides a pleasant coolness on hot days.
In the choice of materials we focused on nature. We covered the retaining walls and small architecture with natural stone. The color contrasts with the bark of pine trees and forest cover.
