Garden Design in Saska Kępa – Urban Garden 001
Introduction: “Urban Garden 001” is a unique project located in the heart of Warsaw’s Saska Kępa. This 300 m² design serves as an example of a successful revitalization of a residential space in the historic part of the district. The main goal was to create a cozy relaxation zone that respects the surrounding context and fits into the atmosphere of an established garden.
Design Challenges – Modernity in a Historical Context: Designing in Saska Kępa involves the necessity of considering existing mature trees and the specific, dense urban layout. The challenge was:
- Maintaining Privacy: The plot borders directly on other properties, which required creating green barriers isolating the residents from the neighbors’ view, without the “closed fortress” effect.
- Shade Adaptation: Due to tall trees in the vicinity, the garden required a selection of plant species that cope well with semi-shade conditions.
Functional and Spatial Layout: The concept is based on a dynamic division of space. Key zones were distinguished within the garden space:
- Outdoor Living Room: A spacious terrace finished with longitudinal stone slabs, acting as an extension of the house’s day zone. It is an ideal place for summer dinners.
- Planting Zone and Relaxation Terrace: The central part of the garden consists of an exotic wood terrace with seating, planted around with a low tier of vegetation.
- Green Backdrop: Tiered plantings were introduced along the plot boundaries to create an intimate atmosphere.
Selection of Vegetation and Materials: In the selection of materials, the focus was on classics and nature – exotic wood on the terrace and natural stone on the paths, which perfectly corresponds with the character of the villa development. The plant palette is based on shade-loving species: ferns, hostas, and evergreen shrubs that ensure the garden’s structure also in winter. The whole is complemented by hydrangeas, introducing a romantic color accent.
