How much does a garden project cost in 2026? Why is pricing “by the meter” a mistake?
One of the first questions we hear from Investors planning to surround their home is: “What is the price per square meter of the project?”. It’s a natural question – we’re used to price lists for construction or finishing services, where square meter is the main determinant.
However, in a professional approach to landscaping , a rigid price list per sq. m. is out of the question, and if one is given – it usually works against the client or offers a very simplified concept rather than a detailed design. Why? Because a meter is unequal to a meter, and the architect’s workload depends on what is to be placed on that meter.
Why don’t I price a project “per sq. ft.”?
Imagine two plots of land of identical size – for example, 1000 m².
- Garden A: A flat area to include mostly lawn, a hedge along the border, an irrigation system and a simple driveway.
- Garden B: An area with a slope (escarpment), requiring retaining walls, with a designed gazebo, water features, multi-zone lighting and rich perennial beds that bloom all year round.
The area is the same. However, the time it takes to complete the technical documentation, land ordinance calculations, selection of materials and installation for Garden B is several times longer than for Garden A. Pricing both projects at the same “per meter” rate, the developer of Garden A would overpay, and the Garden B project would be uneconomical to execute to a high standard.
Therefore, as landscape architects with many years of experience, we approach each subject individually. A quote is created only after we get acquainted with the needs of the investor and the specifics of the site.
What does the price of a garden project in 2026 depend on?
The cost of developing documentation is the product of several key factors. They determine how many hours of work we need to devote to create a design that will be flawless in execution.
1. landforms
This is the most important technical factor. A flat plot is simpler to develop. Land with slopes requires making a precise plan for leveling, designing retaining walls, terrain stairs or slopes. This is already engineering, not just gardening – a mistake at this stage can cost the investor a flooded basement or landslide.
2. the complexity of the functional layout
Is the garden to be minimalist and simple or rich in zones (relaxation zone, summer kitchen, playground, vegetable garden)? The more landscaping elements (gazebos, pergolas, fireplaces, water features), the more construction details we need to draw out so that the contractor knows how to build them.
3 Project scope
Professional design is not just about plants. It’s also:
- Photorealistic visualizations.
- Lighting design: selection of luminaires, determination of circuits, control.
- DFA design (small architectural forms): gazebos, pergolas, fireplaces, water features, etc.
- Pavement design: selection of materials, paving patterns, substructure.
4. selection of vegetation (vegetation cover)
Designing a bed that is attractive all year round requires a great deal of botanical knowledge. This is not a random collection of shrubs. It’s a thoughtful composition that takes into account flowering seasons, target plant sizes, their soil requirements and frost resistance. Designing rich perennial plantings is much more time-consuming than designing a row of tuias.
What do you get in the price of the project?
When you pay for a project, you are not buying “pretty pictures.” You are investing in a manual for building your garden. Complete documentation makes it so:
- You avoid costly mistakes at the construction stage (rework is the most expensive).
- You can accurately price the implementation with several contractors (each pricing the same scope of work).
- You are assured that the selected materials and plants will perform well in your ground conditions.
Summary
The cost of the garden design is usually a small percentage of the total investment (usually a few to a dozen percent of the cost of implementation), and is the foundation on which the entire construction is based.
