Decorative panels – an aesthetic element or a functional screen?

When we think of privacy in the garden, the first association is often a hedge or a high fence. But what if we treated the partition not as a necessity, but as a work of art? Decorative panels combine what is most important to us: intimacy and design.

The modern garden is an extension of the living room. Just as in interiors we hang paintings, in the garden the decorative function is taken over by panels. They can be made of rusting Corten steel, painted aluminum or warm wood. Where to place them and how to choose the right design? Here are 5 ideas from an architect.

1. more than a fence – aesthetics meets function

The main task of decorative panels in the garden is usually the function of a view screen. However, unlike a full wall or standard fence spans, an openwork panel does not overwhelm the space.

It’s the perfect solution to:

  • Fence off from the sight of neighbors on the terrace (the so-called screen wall).
  • Hide less attractive areas of the garden (e.g., the composter, trash can or tool house).
  • Separate functional zones (e.g., separate the summer dining room from the pool area).

2 Material matters: Corten, steel or wood?

The choice of material determines the character of the entire arrangement. In our projects we most often reach for:

  • Corten steel: This is a steel that is covered with a characteristic rust patina when exposed to the weather. It is maintenance-free and contrasts brilliantly with luscious greens.
  • Powder-coated aluminum: For fans of minimalism. Lightweight, corrosion resistant, available in any RAL color.
  • Acid-resistant steel: Gives a mirror-gloss or satin effect, bringing a modern, almost laboratory-like shine to the garden.
  • Wood: A classic that warms up the image. Wooden panels (e.g., in the form of trendy fins) go well with architectural concrete.

3. culmination of the viewing axis (Focal Point)

This is a trick we use in modern garden designs. If you have a long path on your plot or a view from your living room window that ends at your neighbor’s fence – put a decorative panel there.

It then becomes a so-called focal point – a point that focuses the eye. A properly positioned panel, especially against a solid wall of greenery (such as yew), acts like a sculpture in an art gallery.

4. night metamorphosis – panel as lantern

The real magic happens after dark. The openwork decorative panel is a dream object for illumination.

By installing a light source behind the panel or just in front of it (from below), we turn it into a giant garden lantern. The light penetrating through the cutouts casts intricate geometric shadows on the terrace and facade.

Architect’s tip: For illuminating panels, warm-colored light is best, which builds a cozy mood. Read more about how to control the atmosphere with light in our article: Lighting the garden

5 Geometry or nature? Laser-cut patterns

Laser cutting technology (CNC) allows you to transfer almost any design to metal. What to choose?

  • Geometric patterns: They suit modern architecture, cubist building blocks and orderly plantings.
  • Organic motifs: Ideal for naturalistic and woodland gardens.

It is also an interesting idea to use the panels as a background for other elements, such as a water feature.

Summary

The decorative panel is proof that in the garden, function can go hand in hand with beauty. Whether you need privacy on your terrace or are looking for a unique decoration, an openwork wall will change the perception of your space.
