MODERN URBAN GARDEN 001

Modern urban garden near Warsaw. Optical enlargement of 150 m²
A small plot of land in the city does not have to mean giving up space. The project “Modern Urban Garden 001” is proof of how you can fool the eye with geometry. In this realization from 2011, we showed how to optically enlarge the garden. On just 150 sqm in Jozefoslaw, we created a multidimensional space. It combines modern design with the need for intimacy, which is crucial in a dense development.
Concept and spatial layout. Playing with illusion
The main challenge here was the very limited space. In order to avoid the “well” effect, we used an unusual compositional trick – a deliberate skewing of the main viewing axis.
Line dynamics
Instead of leading the eye perpendicular to the fence, we angled the garden axis. This simple procedure makes the perspective seem deeper. This makes the garden more attractive.
Stone wall as a backdrop
The highlight of the view axis is a striking stone wall, on which we hung a decorative panel in organic patterns (maple leaves). This wall plays a dual role in the project:
- It provides a strong decorative accent (focal point) on which the eye stops.
- It effectively isolates residents from their neighbors, providing an intimate atmosphere.
Materials and vegetation. Modern minimalism
In the selection of materials, we focused on durability and modern character. They had to correspond with the urban architecture of the building.
- Gabions and slate: On both sides of the main axis we used gabion baskets filled with slate and brick pots. They introduce architectural order and clearly divide the space into zones.
- Architectural vegetation: the plant palette is sparing and disciplined. We chose ornamental grasses and plants with a regular habit. They do not overwhelm the small garden, but emphasize its geometric layout. The greenery here provides a soft backdrop for the rough stone elements.
Garden lighting and mood building
In a small garden, light plays a key role in building the space. We planned evening illumination of the stone wall and spot lights at the gabion pots. They bring out the texture of the materials. They also make the garden after dark an additional atmospheric “room” that pleases the eye with a view from the living room.
